Circular Indiana is a new brand of the old Indiana Recycling Coalition and will be participating in Celebrate Science Indiana this year! Perfect timing for our theme: “Protecting Our Earth”.
Ken Miller, Kelvin Okamoto, and Marla Cherney will have a game called: “Target Your Trash” to encourage children to think about the right thing to do with trash. In a fun and engaging way, the booth volunteers will have conversations about how science can help fix our waste problems. Booth visitors can view a video and see some demos, we ask them an age-appropriate questions about what should be our action for various consumer products. Example, beverage bottle, paper, clothing, food scrap, electronics, cell phone. What are the implications when we just throw things in the trash? How can science help improve the outcome? Reduce/Avoid it? Reuse it? Recycle it? Compost it? After a discussion, the child can fire a Nerf gun at target hit it and win a small prize.
Circular Indiana envisions a prosperous economy, equitable quality of life, and a healthy environment through eliminating waste and elevating the value of resources. They are working to change the fact that Indianapolis lags regional neighbors in recycling participation rates. Leading a transformation, they are driving change to go well beyond just recycling with focus on education and advocacy to strengthen the circular economy.
Indiana is ready to leverage our unique strengths—manufacturing industry, transportation network, and geographic position—to eliminate waste, create jobs, and strengthen supply chains with benefits for all. WHY CIRCULAR? Many challenges exist in our current linear system of take, make, waste, and dispose. The circular economy eliminates waste, captures resources, and restores nature. It functions to keep products and materials in use longer to improve the efficiency and productivity of our resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing, AND recycling to create a continuous system. Recycling is an important part of the circular economy, but we also need to go beyond recycling. By rethinking our relationship with materials, we can redistribute the responsibility for managing waste to create a more resilient future.
Although we are focusing on “Protecting Our Earth” at Celebrate Science Indiana 2022 at the Indiana State Fairgrounds Elements Financial Pavilion on Saturday October 1st from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm, we appreciate companies and organizations like Circular Indiana who are looking out for our earth 365 days a year.
