Teacher's Treasures
At the Booth:
Experiment: Will it Sink or Float!?
What: We will bring a few different liquids with us and a variety of random items. It’s up to our young scientists to create a ‘hypothesis’ based on their observational evidence whether that item will sink or float in each liquid—we’ll also bring salt and dish soap to add to the liquids to see if that makes a difference! For older students, we will bring paper and encourage students to make a paper boat and see how many items they can fit in the boat before it sinks. What makes a good boat design?
About this exhibitor
Teachers' Treasures was founded in 2000 by a retired school principal, Phyllis Imel, who wished to continue helping the at-risk children in the community succeed in school. The "free store for teachers" opened in a small unused area in the basement of Washington Community School on the near Westside. A dedicated staff of volunteers began seeking product and financial contributions which could be used to provide teachers with the educational supplies and materials needed by the children in their classrooms. As awareness and interest grew throughout the educational and business communities, so did the need for more room. This need was met by Kroger, who leased a former store at 1800 E. 10th Street to the organization for a nominal fee. In September 2007, Teachers' Treasures opened a new location almost three times larger than the original space.

About this exhibitor
Our mission is to engage diverse communities to create vibrant public places, helping people and nature thrive™. KIB sees a beautiful Indianapolis that is loved, cared for, and ecologically rich. A city defined by strong neighborhoods, inspired places, and a clean, flourishing environment. KIB will engage and empower people to improve environmental equity throughout the city. In February 2021, the Board of Directors of Keep Indianapolis Beautiful (KIB) approved the organization’s next Strategic Plan, covering the next four years (2021 – 2024). The guiding principle of this plan is a focus on improving environmental equity in Indianapolis. A data-driven analysis has shown that some neighborhoods in Indianapolis have access to fewer environmental benefits like trees, green space, and clean streets than others. KIB will work alongside residents to thoughtfully deploy resources that aim to improve equitable access to these benefits. he Plan includes three key goals: 1). To improve access to environmental benefits, so people can thrive in nature. This includes not only improving access to existing and new green spaces and waterways, but also improving biodiversity. KIB will focus not only on reducing the amount of litter, but also, to reduce the act of littering in the first place. 2). To broaden neighborhood representation and community input into our organization’s decision making. KIB will create new community stakeholder groups to give voice and agency to different neighborhoods, to increase education, and create awareness. Community members will have influence on KIB’s decisions about where and how to bring our resources to a neighborhood. 3). To ensure long-term sustainability of the organization. KIB will work toward diversifying its income sources, build cash reserves, and increase endowment dollars to support the first two goals.

At the Booth: Learn about the relationship between soil, worms, and ecosystem health by participating in a citizen science project and spin the wheel to test your knowledge about climate change.
About this exhibitor
Our mission: To co-create environmental resilience and climate solutions by integrating research, education, and community. Our vision: An environmental resilience revolution. At ERI, we envision a future deeply and broadly transformed through co-produced knowledge and action that spurs systemic change. By moving away from the rigid and unsustainable strategies of the past, we can create a resilient and sustainable tomorrow—together. What is environmental resilience? It’s the ability of our interconnected human-natural systems to curb the causes of environmental change while adapting sustainably and equitably to unstoppable change. For many, “environment” means only the natural world. At ERI, “environment” is an interlinked human and natural system. Often, “resilience” is defined as the ability of a system to maintain function amidst change. At ERI, it’s more than that—it’s a commitment to eliminating the root causes of environmental disturbance and slowing the rate and intensity of change while building adaptive systems that thrive, now and in the future, for all.

About this exhibitor
After 45 years as a Purdue University entomology professor, Dr. Tom Turpin retired in July, leaving a colorful legacy of cricket-spitting, cockroach races, and ladybug-themed tuxedos. He helped establish Purdue’s Bug Bowl, (the world’s largest insect-themed festival, and regularly brought along exotic and interesting creatures to share with his audience). He encourages students to expand their learning horizons.
Reflecting on his experiences he said, “The goal is not to make entomologists, but to make them entomological consumers,” . “One of the most exciting things about teaching is when someone comes up at the end of class and says they didn’t know that, they learned something, and they thought it was cool.”

This is especially true for activities that use ingredients commonly found in a kitchen and are explained at a level that non-scientists can understand. This website also provides free science learning resources such as science experiments you can do at home or in the classroom. Our blog will guide you in ways you can introduce STEM to your child, even if you are not a scientist yourself. We are also available for hire to do demonstrations with children at preschools, corporate STEM Day events, and more.

CIRCULAR INDIANA is focused on education and advocacy to strengthen the circular economy. Indiana is ready to leverage our unique strengths—manufacturing industry, transportation network, and geographic position—to eliminate waste, create jobs, and strengthen supply chains with benefits for all. Circular Indiana is here to lead the transformation. WHY CIRCULAR? Many challenges exist in our current linear system of take, make, waste, and dispose. The circular economy eliminates waste, captures resources, and restores nature. It functions to keep products and materials in use longer to improve the efficiency and productivity of our resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing AND recycling to create a continuous system. Recycling is an important part of the circular economy, but we also need to go beyond recycling. By rethinking our relationship with materials, we can redistribute the responsibility for managing waste to create a more resilient future.
